What to Expect from Barktoberfest
One of the most exciting parts of Barktoberfest is the costume contest. Whether your dog is rocking a pumpkin outfit, superhero cape, or something totally unexpected, this is their time to shine. There will be prizes for creativity, cuteness, and crowd favorites, so don’t be shy with those costumes. You can also explore local vendors, enjoy dog-friendly activities, and grab a bite from some of Durham’s favorite food trucks. It’s a fun-filled afternoon that both pets and humans will love.
Barktoberfest is more than just a seasonal event. It’s a chance to spend quality time outdoors, connect with fellow dog lovers, and make some unforgettable fall memories.
Fall Festival Dos & Don’ts with Fido
Do pack an essentials kit. Bring plenty of water and treats to keep your dog hydrated and full. These treats can be used to help your pup practice skills they’ve learn in training through positive reinforcement. Be sure to also stock up on plenty of potty bags and any weather-specific items. Booties, vests, and sweaters may be necessary for the event!
Don’t assume all pets are friendly. Just because your pup is a friendly one doesn’t mean all pets are ready for furry friends. Keep your distance until it is clear that your dog and the others are ready to interact. No interaction should be forced. Pay special attention to the comfort level of your furry friend and the people and dogs with whom they interact.
Do use a strong, sturdy leash. A non-retractable leash that provides 4 to 6 feet of freedom gives you great control, protecting your pup and other guests.
Don’t leave your dog unattended. When celebrating any event in public with your pup, it’s essential to keep them with you at all times. This means finding dog-friendly areas where you can rest if needed. Safety, especially in public, is always a top priority.
Do check ID tags. Before attending any event with your furbaby, ensure your dog is wearing a secure collar with up-to-date identification tags. It’s also a good idea to have your dog microchipped so they can be found even in the unfortunate event they get off-leash.
